UFF celebrates Maine Seaweed Week! Join artist and marine scientist Oriana Poindexter for an interactive art-science workshop to learn the cyanotype, or sun printing, process. Learn this early alternative photographic process and use local seaweed species to create your own art prints using techniques first developed in the 1840s. Carissa Maurin, Aquaculture Project Manager at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, will join us to share her expertise on the local seaweed species, with seaweed provided by Nautical Farms.

This workshop will teach you the fundamentals of the cyanotype process, its history, seaweed identification, and will culminate with each participant creating their own original cyanotype prints - usually something frame worthy.

The first portion of the workshop will involve an introduction, demonstration, seaweed identification, and selection of materials, and the second portion will be a printing session. If you have materials you’d like to bring to use for printing (sentimental objects, dried botanicals, etc), please feel free to bring them.
